Se você lembra do post que escrevi sobre get carried away, a dica de hoje vai ser… bem, a piece of cake!
Isso porque o phrasal verb carry away é usado de forma bem parecida com a daquela expressão: para falar de alguém que “foi arrebatado” por uma emoção ou “se deixou levar”, “se entusiasmou demais” com um acontecimento.
Além disso, podemos usar carry away como eufemismo no sentido de “furtar” alguma coisa. E, finalmente, carry away também significa “levar embora”.
A seguir, alguns exemplos ilustrando todas essas acepções.
1 – “Arrebatar”, “enlevar”, etc.
The girl was carried away by her pity.
A menina foi arrebatada pela pena que sentia.
The beauty of the music carried him away.
A beleza da música o levou para longe.
The fervor of the speech carried away the whole crowd.
O fervor do discurso arrebatou toda a multidão.
He was carried away by the music.
Ele foi arrebatado pela música.
I am worried how carried away people are getting with this England team.
Estou preocupado com o quanto as pessoas estão se deixando levar com esse time da Inglaterra.
Sorry to ramble for so long—the subject of art just carries me away!
Desculpe ficar divagando por tanto tempo – arte é um tema que simplesmente me arrebata!
The excitement of the parade carried us all away.
O empolgamento do desfile nos deixou todos entusiasmados.
2 – “Levar” no sentido de “roubar” (ou “raptar”, no caso de pessoas):
The kidnappers carried away the child when no one was looking.
Os raptores levaram a criança quando ninguém estava olhando.
Someone carried our lawn furniture away while we were on vacation.
Alguém levou os nossos móveis de jardim enquanto estávamos de férias.
The looters carried away everything in the store.
Os saqueadores levaram tudo da loja.
I think someone carried away our new porch furniture—it’s nowhere in sight!
Acho que alguém roubou nossa nova mobília de alpendre – ela não está em lugar algum
(Ou, mais literalmente, …em lugar algum a vista!)
3 – “Levar” ou “levar embora” – usamos nessa acepção para dizer que um rio ou correnteza “levou” alguma coisa.
Luckily, the lifeguard was able to rescue Dan after the current carried him away.
Por sorte, o salva-vidas conseguiu resgatar o Dan depois que a corrente o havia levado.
The garbage collectors carried away the trash.
Os lixeiros levaram o lixo embora.
I forgot to tie the canoe to the dock, and the river carried it away.
Eu me esqueci de amarrar a canoa ao cais e agora o rio a levou.
The boy dropped a stick in the river and the current carried it away.
O menino jogou um pedaço de pau no rio e a corrente o levou embora.
