Gild The Lily | O que significa esta expressão?

“Dourar o lírio?” Que expressão estranha é essa? Calma que vamos explicar. Apesar de essa ser mesmo a tradução literal de gild the lily, o seu significado é bem diferente.

Basicamente, gild the lily quer dizer adornar desnecessariamente algo que já é bonito ou aprimorar algo que já está perfeito. É por isso que podemos traduzir essa expressão como “exagerar”, “enfeitar em excesso” ou “embelezar o que já é belo”. Caso a conotação da frase seja positiva, também podemos usar o verbo “caprichar”.
